Code of Conduct and Ethics

Code of Conduct & Ethics

Purpose

The purpose of this Code of Conduct & Ethics is to set out the standards of behaviour expected of those who are members of EUnity Lewes in interactions with others (including on-line interactions).

The Code of Conduct & Ethics sets out certain basic principles and values which are intended to guide members in maintaining the highest standards of conduct. Should a case arise where a member is believed to have fallen short of the standards expected, a Disciplinary Panel may be convened to consider the matter, as set out in the Association’s Rules and Constitution.

Conduct

1. Have regard to basic human rights
Members should have regard to basic human rights, and should avoid any actions which adversely affect such rights. Members should not discriminate in their dealings with individuals or organisations on the grounds of race, colour, religious beliefs or practices, ethnic or national origin, disabilities, gender, sexuality, marital status or age.

2. Comply with the law

Members shall comply with all relevant UK laws.

3. Promote the objectives of EUnity Lewes

Members shall seek to promote the objectives of EUnity Lewes, as set out in its Rules and Constitution, and should not engage in any action which is contrary to those objectives.

4. Don’t bring EUnity Lewes into disrepute

Members of the Association shall conduct themselves in such a way that their behaviour cannot reasonably be regarded by the Executive Committee of EUnity Lewes as bringing the Association into disrepute.

5. Don’t speak on behalf of EUnity Lewes unless expressly authorised to do so

Members should be clear that they are speaking and acting in a personal capacity unless expressly authorised to speak for EUnity Lewes.

Ethics

6. Be inclusive
We welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to members of any sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, religion, and mental and physical ability.

7. Be considerate

Members depend on each other to achieve the Association aims. Be aware that your actions and words will affect others you come into contact with; you should take those consequences into account when acting or communicating.

8. Be respectful

Disagreement with others is no excuse for disrespectful behaviour. Do not allow disagreement to become a personal attack. An environment where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive or creative one.

9. Choose your words carefully

Always conduct yourself professionally. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down others. Harassment and exclusionary behaviour aren’t acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Threats of violence
  • Libel and slander
  • Discriminatory jokes and language
  • Personal insults
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour.

10. Don’t harass

In general, if someone asks you to stop something, then stop. When we disagree, try to understand why. Differences of opinion and disagreements are often unavoidable. What is important is that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively.

11. Make differences into strengths

We can find strength in diversity. Different people have different perspectives on issues, and that can be valuable for solving problems or generating new ideas. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere. Instead, focus on understanding each other and resolving issues amicably.
